INTEL IEP
Project: The Ease of Use Roundtable (a consortium of PC manufacturers
headed up by Intel) had created a tool--the Initial Experience
Predictor--for PC developers that would predict novice users' experience
with home PCs. The tool was over two years old and needed to be updated
to accommodate new technology.
Method: The multi-step process consisted of testing various home PC
systems with target users, drafting a scored checklist of usability
problems found, repeating the test with evaluators using the checklist,
and then evaluating the checklist for validity and reliability. The
outcome was a checklist tool that was predictive (checklist scores
correlated highly with usability test results) and reliable (checklist
scores for the same systems correlated acorss different evaluators). The
updated IEP is used as a part of major OEMs' development cycle and as an
ease-of-use measurement tool for Intel's Innovative PC Award.
